Webcam vs. Videophone

The webcam and videophone were invented to visually connect friends, family, and businesses. However, the question is raised why the webcam was such a success and the videophone was such a failure.

Both video communication devices have similar functions. However, the videophone probably made users self-conscious. Dickson & Bowers noted in their videophone assessment that they had a limited field view, lower resolution, and lack of color. The bigger issues that would make a user self-conscious included human skin being partially transparent, being able to see whiskers beneath the skin, and toupees and wigs were more identifiable. Add on the price of these devices, and they were not that marketable of a product. Great idea. Bad execution.

Webcams have minimized the distance of friends and family. No matter if they are in the next city or in another country, they are only a click away. Popular chatting programs such as Skype and iChat enable users to not communicate with text but also video.

These devices are not only used for catching up. They are also used for business conferences and file transfers. All the user needs is an Internet connection and one of the free programs (Skype or iChat).

Webcams are very affordable and come in different forms. Many computers now have built-in webcams. If your computer is not equipped with a webcam, they can be purchased at any store that carries electronics. Prices usually vary from $20 to $120. You will definitely get what you pay for.

While both the videophone and webcam have similar functions, the details were what led to the success of one and the failure of the other. From prices, to picture quality, to formats, the webcam outshined the videophone.

My suggestion is to get a webcam that is built-in to your computer. MacBooks (I’m pretty biased when it comes to Apple) have a great picture with countless formats, and endless possibilities. Webcams allow distance to not be an issue. Now anyone is just a click away.
